 Transmissions/Transaxles

5-speed Manual Overdrive Transmission (T50D)
The 5-speed manual overdrive transmission is standard on all V-6 Mustang models.(1)

Features and benefits:

  • First four gears provide optimum performance
  • Fifth-gear overdrive provides improved fuel economy and reduces engine wear
  • The Mustang manual transmission provides a Reverse-gear brake that gradually stops the rotation of internal transmission components before shifting into Reverse. This helps reduce the chance of "grinding" gears when shifting from forward gears into Reverse

(1) Mustang V-6 Premium Convertible features a standard automatic transmission.

5-speed Manual Overdrive Transmission (T45)
Standard on all Mustang GT models.

Features and benefits:

  • Designed to handle the high torque load of the 4.6L SOHC V-8 engine
  • Fifth-gear overdrive provides optimum fuel economy and reduced engine wear by reducing engine rpm at highway speeds
  • Includes a Reverse-gear brake that gradually stops the rotation of internal transmission components before shifting into Reverse. This helps reduce the chance of "grinding" gears when shifting from forward gears into Reverse

 Design/Styling

Exterior Styling

Mustang is designed with an overall ground-hugging appearance that emphasizes its agile stance. The hood scoop, side scoop and pony emblem in the chrome "corral" band are classic Mustang design elements. New for 2001, the GT models have a unique hood and side scoops to create further distinction between the V-6 and GT models.

Exterior Colors

For 2001, three new Exterior Colors are available:
  • Mineral Gray Clearcoat Metallic (TK)
  • True Blue earcoat Metallic (L2)
  • Zinc Yellow Clearcoat Metallic (B7)

Vertical Tailamps

The Vertical Taillamps feature a signature tri-bar design that is reminiscent of the original Mustang.

Rear Decklid Spoiler

The available Rear Decklid Spoiler has a new design for 2001. The single-wing spoiler adds to Mustang's sporty appearance.

Interior Styling

The Mustang Interior Styling is color-coordinated for a contemporary look. The upper instrument panel and center stack are a darker shade than the interior. The headliner, rear package tray, A- and C-pillar moldings, coat hooks and visors are also color-keyed to the rest of the interior. The dual-cockpit shape is a return to the classic Mustang interior. The wraparound design is modern and driver-friendly.

Leather-wrapped Steering Wheel

Mustang GT models have a standard Leather-wrapped Steering Wheel, which provides a sporty appearance and driver comfort.

 All-speed Traction Control

The available All-Speed Traction Control uses components of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) to monitor wheel slippage at any speed. The system improves traction on slippery or loose driving surfaces by using a combination of brake and/or engine control:

  • Braking at one or both drive wheels
  • Fuel injection cutoff
  • Ignition spark retard
  • Air/fuel ratio control

When the traction control system is activated at speeds of 35 mph or higher, the braking system is deactivated and only engine control is used to limit wheel spin.

Traction control helps provide a confident driving experience under adverse road conditions - improving vehicle traction and steering control - without sacrificing dry-pavement performance. Your customers will appreciate it under many common driving situations:

  • When the lane is slippery on one or both sides
  • As the vehicle pulls out from icy parking lots or highway shoulders
  • During acceleration when cornering

The system is tuned specifically for the Mustang driver, adjusting control when cornering or accelerating to provide traction when the driver needs it.

Traction Control may be switched off when more performance-oriented driving is desired. The system defaults to ON when the engine is started. The Traction Control switch is easily accessible in the shifter bezel in front of the gearshift lever. When Traction Control is working, the driver will see the light in the instrument cluster.

Engineering Insights

Ford research discovered that 57 percent of all Mustang GT owners and 74 percent of Mustang V-6 owners and potential buyers would purchase a traction control system if it was available on Mustang.

Unique to Mustang, the Power Start feature allows optimum wheel spin from a standing start on dry pavement. The Traction Control system is designed to recognize when the driver is accelerating hard, then it goes into a performance programming mode. As long as the vehicle accelerates forward, the Power Start feature stays engaged.

Traction Control may not significantly improve traction when both drive wheels are on a slippery surface. However, it optimizes the use of available traction to give the driver greater steering control. By controlling excess wheel slip, the system allows the vehicle to make full use of whatever traction is available to the tires.

Traction Control's brake intervention works best on road surfaces that may be wet or slippery at the shoulder and dry in the center. The system brakes the drive wheel that shows the greater tendency to slip, slowing it down to a predetermined slip rate.
