Transmissions

Five-speed manual overdrive transaxle (G5M)

This five-speed manual overdrive transaxle is standard on Escape.

Features and benefits:

  • A synchronizer in each gear acts as a clutch, speeding up or slowing down the selected gear to match the speed of the previous gear for smooth shifting
  • First four gears provide optimum performance
  • An overdrive fifth gear reduces engine rpm at highway speeds for improved fuel economy and quiet highway performance

Electronically controlled four-speed automatic overdrive transaxle (CD4E)

Escape is available with the optional electronically controlled four-speed automatic overdrive transaxle (CD4E).

Features and benefits:

  • A torque converter with bypass clutch for optimum efficiency
  • Silent chain and planetary gear design provide quiet operation
  • Overdrive lowers engine rpm at highway speeds and contributes to reduced fuel use
  • Fully electronically controlled shifting matches engine performance and driver demands
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compensates shift points for altitude and temperature variations
  • Offers 6500 rpm shift capability
  • "Home-safe" mode allows limited function in second and third gears if electronic control is lost
  • CD4E has a transaxle control switch (TCS) or "overdrive lockout" for use on hilly terrain and when towing a trailer

 Instrument Panel / Instrument Cluster

Escape features a dynamic, attractive Instrument Panel that is both user-friendly and useful. It's ergonomically designed with easy-to-use controls and features. Most prominent is the white-background, dial-type speedometer. The cluster also includes a trip odometer, tachometer, fuel and temperature gauges. Warning lamps include: high beam, turn signals, 4x4 "ON", low oil pressure, low fuel, overdrive off, parking brake on, safety belts, door ajar, Anti-lock Braking System, low coolant, airbag system, front fog lamps on and check engine.

Engineering Insights

When developing the instrument panel design, Escape engineers and designers tested the white background speedometer at various times of the day. Initially, they found that in low-light conditions --- such as dusk and dawn --- the speedometer was difficult to read. The team then added black lines and green lights to the speedometer so that it can be read in all light conditions.

 Design

 Exterior Design Concept

The goal of the Exterior Design Concept was to create an SUV that looks as capable as it actually is without appearing too aggressive. When your customers see Escape, they'll see a muscular, athletic exterior with a forward-tilting stance and standard fog lamps on XLT. The wide bodyside cladding provides a functional, off-road-ready look.

 Exterior Colors

Escape offers your customers eight Exterior Color choices that complement the rugged lines of this all-new SUV. Exterior colors choices are: Oxford White Clearcoat, Chrome Yellow Clearcoat, Light Parchment Gold Clearcoat Metallic, Bright Red Clearcoat, Toreador Red Clearcoat Metallic, Medium Wedgewood Blue Clearcoat Metallic, Black Clearcoat, Dark Highland Green Clearcoat Metallic

 Exterior Trim

Escape's Front and Rear Bumpers continue the athletic design nuances while offering utility. Both the front and rear bumpers feature molded-in color. The front bumper has integral vertical brush guards and the rear bumper offers a step surface.

 Front and Rear Bumpers

Your customers may want to consider equipping their Escape with Side Step Bars. These add to the overall style of the vehicle and help occupants get into and out of Escape.

 Interior Colors

Escape's Interior Colors add to its design appeal. There are two available interior color packages: Medium Parchment and Medium Graphite.

Unibody Monocoque Construction

Escape reflects unibody monocoque construction. This type of construction differs from ladder-type or body-on-frame vehicles. The unibody design results in refined handling, excellent maneuverability and precise fit and finish. This type of construction allows the vehicle to be compact and lightweight. With this type of design, the body provides the structure of the vehicle rather than the body resting on top of a frame. The body side panels are stamped in single sections that encompass door openings. This helps ensure more accurate door openings and precise fit and finish.
