Key Features

The 2001 Excursion 4-door, which seats up to 9 passengers, is the heavy-duty SUV in the Ford Outfitter's Family. It takes the go anywhere and do anything SUV attitude and incorporates the No Boundaries heritage. New features for 2001 include a more powerful 7.3L diesel V8 and an available 6-disc in-dash CD player, plus revised exterior styling cues on both models. Defining features include 10,000 pound maximum towing capacity, Blocker Beam^TM Protection System, rear Tri-Panel Door^TM System, plentiful interior space and superior seating and comfort with 146.4 cu. Ft. of cargo room, and available power adjustable brake and accelerator pedals (late availability).

5.4L SOHC 16V V-8 (Expedition and Excursion)

This engine, part of Ford's modular lineup, is available with a four-speed automatic transmission only. This engine shares the same basic Triton™ design as the 4.6L V-8.

Major features and benefits:

The SOHC V-8 features one camshaft in each cylinder head (at the top of each cylinder bank), eliminating the need for pushrods
The SOHC design provides a finer level of valve control
Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components for greater reliability and fuel economy
Silent-design chain cam drive contributes to durability and helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)
Coil-on-plug ignition system design replaces spark plug wires for high-mileage durability
Platinum-tipped spark plugs help provide sure-fire ignition and contribute to a 100,000-mile scheduled tune-up interval.(1) The metal platinum retains its conductive properties much longer than traditional spark plugs, thereby increasing reliability over the years and requiring less maintenance
A fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine overheats, it will automatically switch from eight-cylinder operation to alternating four-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to operate, but with limited engine power. This system allows the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or to reach a service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and road conditions

7.3L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel V-8 (Excursion)

The Power Stroke 7.3L Direct Injection Turbo Diesel V-8 engine is available on Excursion. The engine is built for Ford by Navistar.

Major features and benefits:

Direct-injection fuel delivery places one fuel injector inside the combustion chamber of each cylinder. This sophisticated fuel delivery system helps provide optimum fuel efficiency, power and quick starting, especially in cold weather
Engine operation is fully controlled by the EEC-V engine computer for optimum efficiency and performance
High peak horsepower rpm gives the engine a wide power band that enhances driving ease and the gasoline "feel" to the engine's performance
Turbocharger enhances engine performance by forcing a denser air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber
Excursion features a waste-gated turbocharger and intercooler for power and performance
Low-maintenance components include:
- Self-tensioning single serpentine V-ribbed belt designed to last up to 100,000 miles under normal operating conditions without service
- Fuel filter designed to perform up to 15,000 miles before service
- Large-capacity micro-filtration oil filter

The 7.3-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel engine features direct injection in a hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled unit injector (HEUI) fuel system. Direct injection is a heavy-duty fuel delivery system, delivering fuel under extremely high pressure with precise electronic control, contributing to fuel economy and helping to control emissions
