Transmissions

Electronically controlled four-speed wide-ratio automatic overdrive transmission (4R70W)

An electronically controlled four-speed wide-ratio automatic overdrive transmission is available on Explorer equipped with the 5.0L OHV V-8 engine, and Expedition with the 4.6L engines.

Features and benefits:

  • Fully electronic shift control provides a wide range of smooth shifts for optimum performance
  • Overdrive lowers engine rpm at highway speeds, contributing to fuel economy
  • Lockup torque converter downsized for efficiency and high-rpm engine use
  • 100 percent of torque is converted mechanically in third and fourth gears
  • Gear ratios selected for maximum utilization of engine's broad torque range; provides increased output of low-gear torque and enhances start-up performance
  • Overdrive transmission control switch mounted on shift lever locks out overdrive fourth gear when additional engine torque is needed or to obtain third-gear engine braking on downgrades

Electronically controlled five-speed automatic overdrive transmission(5R55E)(1)

This five-speed automatic transmission, which contributes to excellent performance, excellent fuel economy and quiet operation, is available on Explorer Sport and Sport Trac.

Features and benefits

  • Uses "swap-shift" technology
  • The second gear's precise gear ratios improve the vehicle's ability to accelerate, climb hills, tow and operate off-road
  • When combined with the 4.0L SOHC V-6, this five-speed automatic transmission gives the Explorer a 10,000-lb. GCWR
(1) Driving with a 5-speed automatic transmission (if equipped) - your automatic transmission electronically controls the shift feel by using an adaptive learning strategy. This feature is designed to increase durability, and provide consistent shift feel over the life of the vehicle. It is normal for a new transmission to shift firmly. This operation is considered normal and will not affect function durability of the transmission. Once the vehicle is at operating temperature it may take several shifts at the same operating condition for the transmission to properly adapt. Over time the adaptive learning process will fully update transmission operation. The more varied the driving habits, speed and torque, the longer it may take to adapt but the more complete the process will be. When the battery is disconnected or a new battery installed, the transmission must learn its adaptive strategy. As a result of this, the transmission may shift firmly. This operation is considered normal and will fully update transmission operation to its optimum shift feel.
