Engines
4.0L SOHC 12V
V-6 (Explorer 4-Door,(1) Sport and Sport Trac)
The 4.0L SOHC V-6 is standard on Explorer 4-Door, Sport and Sport Trac models
with manual transmission.
Major features and benefits:
- The SOHC V-6 features one camshaft in each cylinder head (at the top of
each cylinder bank), eliminating the need for pushrods
- The SOHC design provides a significant level of valve control
- Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection precisely monitors the
fuel delivered to each intake port for efficient operation
- A tuned variable-induction system, in which a vacuum-actuated valve varies
the effective length of the air-intake tracts by separating or combining the
two halves of a split-intake manifold plenum. At lower rpm, the closed valve
separates the intake pulses from each bank of the engine up to the throttle
body, providing a longer effective tract length for better low-speed torque.
At higher rpm, the valve opens, allowing the intake pulses from all
cylinders to combine in the plenum and optimizing high-speed power

5.0L OHV 16V
V-8 (Explorer)(1)
The 5.0L OHV V-8 is a proven engine available on Explorer XLT, Eddie Bauer
and Limited models.
Major features and benefits:
- Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection () precisely monitors
timing of fuel delivered to each intake port
- The air intake system features a large throttle-body and intake manifold
air passages to increase the volume of air supplied to the engine for
optimum performance
- Hydraulic lifters and roller tappets help reduce valvetrain friction and
noise
- Performance camshaft and valvetrain provide increased valve lift and
duration, allowing an enhanced air/fuel mixture to reach the combustion
chambers for greater performance
- Forged aluminum pistons contribute to lighter weight and less wear

Transmissions
Electronically
controlled four-speed wide-ratio automatic overdrive transmission (4R70W)
|
An electronically controlled four-speed wide-ratio automatic
overdrive transmission is available on Explorer equipped with the 5.0L
OHV V-8 engine, and Expedition with the 4.6L engines.
|
|
Features and benefits:
- Fully electronic shift control provides a wide range of smooth
shifts for optimum performance
- Overdrive lowers engine rpm at highway speeds, contributing to
fuel economy
- Lockup torque converter downsized for efficiency and high-rpm
engine use
- 100 percent of torque is converted mechanically in third and
fourth gears
- Gear ratios selected for maximum utilization of engine's broad
torque range; provides increased output of low-gear torque and
enhances start-up performance
- Overdrive transmission control switch mounted on shift lever locks
out overdrive fourth gear when additional engine torque is needed or
to obtain third-gear engine braking on downgrades
|
Electronically
controlled five-speed automatic overdrive transmission(5R55E)(1)
| This five-speed automatic transmission, which contributes to excellent
performance, excellent fuel economy and quiet operation, is available on
Explorer Sport and Sport Trac. |
|
Features and benefits
- Uses "swap-shift" technology
- The second gear's precise gear ratios improve the vehicle's
ability to accelerate, climb hills, tow and operate off-road
- When combined with the 4.0L SOHC V-6, this five-speed automatic
transmission gives the Explorer a 10,000-lb. GCWR
|
(1) Driving with a 5-speed automatic transmission (if equipped) - your automatic
transmission electronically controls the shift feel by using an adaptive
learning strategy. This feature is designed to increase durability, and provide
consistent shift feel over the life of the vehicle. It is normal for a new
transmission to shift firmly. This operation is considered normal and will not
affect function durability of the transmission. Once the vehicle is at operating
temperature it may take several shifts at the same operating condition for the
transmission to properly adapt. Over time the adaptive learning process will
fully update transmission operation. The more varied the driving habits, speed
and torque, the longer it may take to adapt but the more complete the process
will be. When the battery is disconnected or a new battery installed, the
transmission must learn its adaptive strategy. As a result of this, the
transmission may shift firmly. This operation is considered normal and will
fully update transmission operation to its optimum shift feel.

Neutral
Towing
|
Many of your customers may have asked whether or not they can tow
their factory-equipped vehicles with all four wheels on the ground.
Referred to as Neutral Towing, this procedure is popular with
vacationers who own recreational vehicles and like to take a second
vehicle with them when they travel.
The following quick-reference chart will help you answer whether or
not specific Ford vehicles can be neutral towed; however, be sure to
consult the individual vehicle's Owner's Guide for specific towing
methods or restrictions.
