Engines
| 4.2L
OHV 12V V-6 (F-150 and E-Series)
This member of the F-150 and E-Series lineup combines quiet operation
with responsive performance and load-handling power. Standard on F-150
and E-Series Van and Wagon models.
Major features and benefits:
- The split-port induction (SPI) system uses an intake manifold with
two runners per cylinder. These runners carry the air charge to the
intake side of the combustion chamber. At lower engine speeds, the
air charge is directed through a narrow pathway that squeezes the
air through at a higher velocity, quickening engine response,
optimizing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. As engine speed
increases above 3000 rpm, the second, wider air path is opened. The
increased volume of air allowed by this second path works to further
enhance engine power and operating efficiency
- Platinum-tipped spark plugs help provide sure-fire ignition and
contribute to a 100,000-mile scheduled tune-up interval.(1)
The metal platinum retains its conductive properties much longer
than traditional spark plugs, thereby increasing reliability over
the years and requiring less maintenance
- A fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect the engine
from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine
overheats, it will automatically switch from 6-cylinder operation to
alternating 3-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to
operate, but with limited engine power. This system allows the
driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or to reach a
service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be
traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and road
conditions

SOHC Triton 16V V-8 (F-150 and E-Series)
The 4.6L SOHC Triton V-8 delivers dependable power and responsive
performance in this "truck-only" version of the modular engine
family.
Major features and benefits:
- The SOHC V-8 features one camshaft in each cylinder head (at the
top of each cylinder bank), eliminating the need for pushrods
- The SOHC design provides a fine level of valve control
- Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components mean
greater reliability and fuel economy
- Silent-design chain cam drive contributes to durability and helps
reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)
- Coil-on-plug ignition system design replaces spark plug wires for
high-mileage durability
- Platinum-tipped spark plugs help provide sure-fire ignition and
contribute to a 100,000-mile scheduled tune-up interval.(1) The
metal platinum retains its conductive properties much longer than
traditional spark plugs, thereby increasing reliability over the
years and requiring less maintenance
- A fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect the engine
from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine
overheats, it will automatically switch from 8-cylinder operation to
alternating 4-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to
operate, but with limited engine power. This system allows the
driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or to reach a
service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be
traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and road
conditions
- The 6-quart cast aluminum oil pan's large capacity helps hold oil
temperatures down - important for severe-duty operation

SOHC 16V V-8 (F-150, Super Duty F-250/350 and E-Series)
This engine, part of Ford's modular lineup, is available with a
4-speed automatic transmission only and shares the same basic Triton
design as the 4.6L V-8.
Major features and benefits:
- The SOHC V-8 features one camshaft in each cylinder head (at the
top of each cylinder bank), eliminating the need for pushrods
- The SOHC design provides a finer level of valve control
- Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components mean

Electronically
Controlled 4-Speed Wide-ratio Automatic Overdrive Transmission (4R70W)
|
An electronically controlled 4-speed wide-ratio automatic overdrive
transmission is available on F-150 and E-Series with the 4.2L, 4.6L and
5.4L engines.
Features and benefits:
- Fully electronic shift control provides a wide range of smooth
shifts for optimum performance
- Overdrive lowers engine rpm at highway speeds, contributing to
fuel economy
- Lockup torque converter is downsized for efficiency and high-rpm
engine use
- 100 percent of torque is converted mechanically in third and
fourth gears
- Gear ratios selected for maximum utilization of engine's broad
torque range; provides increased output of low-gear torque and
enhances start-up performance
- Overdrive transmission control switch mounted on shift lever locks
out overdrive fourth gear when additional engine torque is needed or
to obtain third-gear engine braking on downgrades
|
5-Speed
Manual Overdrive Transmission (Mazda R2)
|
A 5-speed manual overdrive transmission is standard on
F-150.
Features and benefits:
- Built through a joint venture with Mazda Motor Company
- First four gears provide optimum performance
- Fifth-gear overdrive reduces engine rpm at highway speeds,
contributing to fuel economy and quiet operation

Snowplow
Applications
Minimum required equipment:
F-150 4x4 Regular Cab & SuperCab 138.8" WB model
- 7700 Payload Group (V-8) Includes:
- GVWR 7700 lbs.
- Powertrain 5.4L engine with 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission
and 3.73 axle ratio (when snowplowing, operate automatic transmission in
overdrive)
- GAWR/torsion bars, front 4150 lbs.
- Super engine cooling
- 72 amp.-hr., 650 CCA battery
- Auxiliary automatic transmission oil cooler
- LT245/75Rx16D OWL all-terrain tires with BSW spare
- 16" x 7" J argent styled steel wheels (7-hole disc) (chrome
styled steel with XLT and Lariat)
- Other heavy-duty components frame (4.00 cu. in. section modulus),
shock absorbers (1.38 ″ diameter), jack (2 ton), rear axle
(5300 lbs. capacity), rear springs/GAWR (4800-lbs.)
- Permanently attached hardware (shown in illustration) must not exceed 50
lbs., and the removable snowplow hardware (not shown) must not exceed 650
lbs. with consideration for the driver and one front seat passenger These
weight limits are based upon a vehicle with maximum buildable Ford option
content and 150 lbs. each for the driver and one front seat passenger
Completed Vehicle Weight
The weight of the completed vehicle with equipment installed (and second unit
body, if applicable) must not exceed the front GAWR, rear GAWR or GVWR
established by Ford. If sufficient weight is added such that the completed
vehicle with a driver and more than one passenger would exceed front GAWR, rear
GAWR or GVWR, it is the responsibility of the equipment installer to notify the
customer of the appropriate use restrictions (i.e., that the user should limit
occupancy of the vehicle to the driver and one passenger while the equipment is
installed.)
The addition of ballast weight, placed rearward of the rear axle, may be
required to prevent front end overloading or exceeding Front GAWR. If required,
the ballast weight must be securely attached to the vehicle.
For Ford completed vehicles of 10,000 lbs. GVWR or less, the weight of
permanently attached equipment must not exceed the Total Accessory Reserve
Capacity (T.A.R.C.) as specified on the Safety Compliance Certification Label.
Permanently attached equipment includes the snowplow frame-mounting hardware,
and does not include the removable snowplow blade assembly. Exceeding T.A.R.C.
will require recertification.
Front-end Wheel Alignment and Headlamp Aim
Front-end wheel alignment (toe) and headlight aim may require adjustment
after installation of equipment, and is the responsibility of the equipment
installer. Failure to reset front wheel alignment may cause premature, uneven
tire wear. If required, reset to chassis manufacturer's specifications found in
the Ford Shop Manual.
Electrical Connections
Installation of any inductive load devices (i.e., electric motors, electric
clutches for clutch pumps, etc.) MUST NOT be connected to OEM wiring or fuse
panels. Power for such devices should be taken directly from the battery or
starter motor relay power terminal. Control of these devices should be achieved
