 Engines

 2.5L SOHC 8V I-4 (Ranger)

This engine offers quiet, powerful performance while providing an economical balance between performance and fuel efficiency.

Major features and benefits:

  • Fully counterweighted crankshaft for reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)
  • The engine features a Mechanical Returnless Fuel System. The system has fewer parts than a conventional fuel return system and helps reduce vehicle emissions
  • The 2.5L I-4 produces 119 horsepower and 146 lb.-ft. of torque

 4.0L SOHC 12V V-6 (Ranger)

The 4.0L SOHC V-6 with sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection (SEFI) is a powerful, smooth-running engine well-suited for truck applications.

Major features and benefits:

  • Permanent magnet starter helps increase efficiency
  • EEC-V Electronic Engine Control module uses mass airflow sensing and a simultaneous double-fire injector for optimum fuel efficiency - masked intake valve enhances inlet turbulence, providing a "fast-burn" combustion process for enhanced fuel economy and a smooth idle
  • Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection precisely monitors the fuel delivered to each intake port for efficient operation
  • Unique upper intake manifold
  • The SOHC V-6 features one camshaft in each cylinder head (at the top of each cylinder bank), eliminating the need for pushrods
  • The SOHC design provides a significant level of valve control
  • A tuned variable-induction system, in which a vacuum-actuated valve varies the effective length of the air-intake tracts by separating or combining the two halves of a split-intake manifold plenum. At lower rpm, the closed valve separates the intake pulses from each bank of the engine up to the throttle body, providing a longer effective tract length for better low-speed torque. At higher rpm, the valve opens, allowing the intake pulses from all cylinders to combine in the plenum and optimizing high-speed power

 Transmissions

5-Speed Manual Overdrive Transmission (Mazda R1)

A 5-speed manual overdrive transmission is available on Ranger.

Features and benefits:

  • Built through a joint venture with Mazda Motor Company
  • First four gears provide optimum performance
  • Fifth-gear overdrive reduces engine rpm at highway speeds, contributing to fuel economy and quiet operation

Electronically Controlled 4-Speed Automatic Overdrive Transmission(4R44E)

An electronically controlled 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission is available on Ranger.

Features and benefits:

  • Fully electronically controlled for optimum smoothness and consistency when shifting
  • Overdrive Off transmission control switch mounted on shift lever locks out overdrive fourth gear when additional engine torque is needed
  • Locking out the overdrive gear is useful to obtain third-gear engine braking on downgrades

Electronically Controlled 5-Speed Automatic Overdrive Transmission (5R55E)

This electronically controlled 5-speed automatic overdrive transmission - which contributes to excellent performance, excellent fuel economy and quiet operation - is available on Ranger.

Features and benefits:

  • Uses "swap-shift" technology
  • The second gear's precise gear ratios improve the vehicle's ability to accelerate, climb hills, tow and operate off-road
  • The 5-speed automatic transmission electronically controls the shift feel by using an adaptive learning strategy. This feature is designed to increase durability and provide consistent shift feel over the life of the vehicle. It is normal for a new trans-mission to shift firmly. This operation is considered normal and will not affect function durability of the transmission. Once the vehicle is at operating temperature, it may take several shifts at the same operating condition for the trans-mission to properly adapt. Over time, the adaptive learning process will fully update transmission operation. The more varied the driving habits, speed and torque, the longer it may take to adapt, but the more complete the process will be
  • When the battery is disconnected or a new battery installed, the transmission must learn its adaptive strategy. As a result of this, the transmission may shift firmly. This operation is considered normal and will fully update transmission operation to its normal shift feel
