Calculating Revolutions per Minute

Many commercial customers want to know what the rpm of an engine will be at a given vehicle speed - instantaneous rpm or engine speed. There's a mathematical formula that can make this calculation quick and easy. Here it is:

The one piece of this equation that may be new to you is "wheel revolutions per mile." True, if you had a strong handle on calculating the circumference of a circle, you could figure it out, but Ford has made it easy - the number is published on the Technical Specifications pages under each vehicle tab and shows the wheel revolutions per mile for the various tires offered.

Also, keep in mind that the "distance per unit of time" figure needs to be in miles per minute (simply divide the mph by 60).

Let's say a customer was considering a Super Duty F-250 4x2 with the 6.8-liter V-10 engine, an automatic transmission and the 3.73 rear axle. This customer wanted to know what the rpm would be in Overdrive at 60 mph. In this case, the calculation would be performed as follows:
