4.6L SOHC Triton™ 16V V-8 (F-150, E-Series)
The 4.6L SOHC Triton 16V V-8 delivers dependable power and responsive performance in this "Truck" version of the modular engine family.

Major features and benefits:

The SOHC V-8 features one camshaft in each cylinder head (at the top of each cylinder bank), eliminating the need for pushrods
The SOHC design provides a fine level of valve control
Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components for reliability and fuel economy
Silent-design chain cam drive contributes to durability and helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)
Platinum-tipped spark plugs help provide sure-fire ignition and contribute to a 100,000-mile scheduled tune-up interval.(1) Platinum retains its conductive properties much longer than traditional spark plugs, thereby increasing reliability over the years and requiring less maintenance
A fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine overheats, it will automatically switch from
8-cylinder operation to alternating 4-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to operate, but with limited engine power. This system allows the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or to reach a service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and road conditions
The 6-quart cast aluminum oil pan's large capacity helps hold oil temperatures down - important for severe-duty operation

6.0L Power Stroke® V-8 Direct Injection Turbo Diesel (E-Series and F-Series Super Duty)
The 6.0L Power Stroke V-8 Direct Injection Turbo Diesel engine is available on E-Series and F-Series Super Duty and is built for Ford by Navistar.

The 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel incorporates a number of diesel engine innovations, including:

Electronic Variable Response Turbocharging (EVRTTM): A 20 percent larger system delivers turbo boost over a wide range of engine revolutions for steep grade climbing, high-altitude performance and towing. EVRT employs a set of vanes that automatically adjust to optimize the airflow within the turbo
Tow/Haul Mode: The powertrain features a "tow/haul mode" that, once activated, can help increase a driver's feeling of control when towing large loads up and down steep grades and automatically minimizes shifts and maximizes available torque. Upon descent, the tow/haul mode utilizes engine braking to help extend brake life and improve driver control
Hydraulic Rail Fuel Injection: Fuel injectors are actuated by a high-pressure hydraulic rail system that generates injection pressures up to 26,000 psi. The high-pressure fuel is quickly atomized as it is released into the combustion chamber to help ensure a clean and efficient combustion event
Pilot Injection: By delivering small quantities of fuel into the combustion chamber prior to the main injection event, the combustion process is both smoother and quieter
Exhaust-Gas Recirculation (EGR): Cooled exhaust gases are recirculated back into the combustion chamber, lowering the burn temperature of the combustion event and, as a result, reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx), while optimizing performance and fuel economy
Ease of Maintenance: The oil filter is located on top of the engine, so it can be easily removed. An innovatively designed oil cartridge, similar in concept to a printer cartridge, keeps oil self-contained during a filter change and the engine free of dripping oil during routine maintenance

Major features and benefits:
Engine operation is precisely controlled by the EEC-V engine computer for optimum efficiency and performance
High peak horsepower rpm gives the engine a wide power band that enhances driving ease
Turbocharger enhances engine performance by forcing a denser air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber

Electronically Controlled TorqShift™ 5-speed Automatic Overdrive Transmission(1)

The TorqShift 5-speed automatic overdrive transmission is available on F-Series and E-Series Super Duty models.

Major features and benefits:

With its 5-speed gearbox and control system to help provide smoother shifts, the TorqShift transmission features high first- and second-gear ratios to launch a vehicle loaded with cargo more quickly and smoothly
TorqShift's control system monitors the engine, transmission, vehicle speed and driver inputs to help optimize shift performance
A selectable tow/haul mode further enhances control by tailoring the upshift schedule for optimized performance during these more demanding activities
The tow/haul mode also senses when conditions call for increased engine braking and automatically schedules the appropriate downshift
The grade-braking feature functions in concert with speed control to help maintain the desired vehicle speed while descending grades
TorqShift's control body employs electronic solenoids to manage the transmission's clutch elements, eliminating the variability experienced with more conventional hydraulic spring/valve systems
The solenoids are placed close to the clutches, thereby minimizing response time
A filter screen is employed to help prevent contamination impacting the solenoids

Additional highlights include:
More torque capability: An improved torque converter is designed to maximize the low-speed torque capability of the powertrain
During peak operating range, the transmission delivers up to an impressive 570 lb.-ft. of torque to the wheels
The transmission has a larger pump to promote better lubrication and cooling
An external filter — similar in concept to the filter on the engine — features a replaceable transmission oil filter cartridge to aid removal of contaminants from the transmission oil
